Community can help Our Mother’s Home win $25,000 grant

By | In The News | No Comments

Our Mother’s Home is among 200 causes nationwide competing for $25,000 grants from the State Farm® Neighborhood Assist program.

The Top 40 organizations with the most votes will receive the grants. The Fort Myers nonprofit agency is looking for community support to help push it to the top of the list. Voting is from Aug. 16 through Aug. 25 and anyone with a valid email address can vote 10 times per day. Votes can be cast at www.neighborhoodassist.com.

State Farm Neighborhood Assist, a crowd-sourced philanthropic program that empowers communities to identify issues in their neighborhoods, received 2,000 submissions across the country. At least one cause was received from every state. The State Farm Review Committee selected the top 200 finalists.

“We are proud to be chosen as one of the top 200, and now we are counting on our supporters and the community to help make us one of the 40 that receives the grant,” said Karen Watson, Executive Director of Our Mother’s Home. “For any nonprofit agency, every dollar counts. This is a chance for everyone to get involved and help raise money for our organization by simply visiting a website and clicking to vote for us.”

Our Mother’s Home is a residential program for teenage foster mothers and their babies to remain together. The mothers learn skills they need to be independent and self-sufficient, breaking the cycle of abuse, neglect and generational poverty. The agency has helped more than 300 mothers and children over the last 17 years.

On Good Neighbor Day, Sept. 28th, the top 40 vote-receiving causes will be announced at www.neighborhoodassist.com and a $25,000 grant will be awarded to each of the affiliated nonprofits.

“Neighborhood Assist is another example of State Farm successfully turning caring into doing in communities all across the U.S.” said Kellie Clapper, State Farm Assistant Vice President. “The communities themselves play an important role in inspiring people to rally and vote for these important causes.”

To vote for a cause, go to www.neighborhoodassist.com through August 25.

Chair #10

Sponsored By: Larue Pest Management

Painted By: Marin Asher

Fort Myers pest control company, Larue Pest Management sponsored this hand painted Adirondack chair.

This dragonfly chair was painted in honor of Florida’s natural pest control providers. Dragonflies are insect predators. Many can be seen patrolling over ponds or parking lots, feasting on no-see’ums and mosquitoes. Others perch on branches or reeds, waiting to ambush the next fly to bumble by.

Next time you see one zip across your yard, consider saying thanks to the dragonfly for helping to control the pest population.
